South Africa’s Original Cellulose Fibre Insulation

Made in South Africa. Proven in South Africa.

Builders’ and Installers’ Ultimate Insulation Choice

When South African builders and installers need to get the job done, THERMGUARD is the trusted cellulose fibre insulation developed for our local climate and building conditions.

Manufactured in South Africa since 1984, THERMGUARD combines more than 40 years of product development and industry experience with a nationwide network of approved installation contractors.

It is locally manufactured, professionally installed and pneumatically blown into the ceiling cavity to provide complete coverage across the ceiling—including difficult-to-reach areas around roof trusses, wiring and pipes.

Proven Performance and Quality

We are committed to ensuring that every bag of THERMGUARD provides consistent quality, durability and thermal performance.

THERMGUARD is supported by independent certification, recognised industry memberships and South African fire-testing standards, providing builders, architects, developers and installers with confidence that the product is fit for purpose.

SABS / SANS

As South Africa’s national standardisation authority, the South African Bureau of Standards develops, promotes and maintains South African National Standards for products, materials and services.

THERMGUARD is tested according to the relevant South African fire-performance standards and can be installed according to the climatic-zone and roof-insulation requirements contained in SANS 10400-XA.

The required installed thickness is determined by the building’s climatic zone, roof construction and required total roof-system R-value.

THERMGUARD has a thermal conductivity of:

K = 0.040 W/(m·K)

Installed thicknesses generally range from 100 mm to 135 mm, providing product R-values from 2.50 to 3.38.

TIPSASA Quality

The Thermal Insulation Products and Systems Association SA is a non-profit industry association comprising insulation manufacturers, suppliers, contractors and consultants.

THERMGUARD is a member of TIPSASA and supports the correct specification and installation of thermal insulation in accordance with South African building regulations.

This provides building professionals with greater confidence that the product is supported by an established South African manufacturer and installed through an approved national contractor network.

Quality Standards

THERMGUARD is manufactured under an ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management system and holds the Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association CI Mark.

Our manufacturing process is carefully controlled to ensure that the product consistently meets the required quality and performance standards.

THERMGUARD has been manufactured in South Africa since 1984, bringing more than 40 years of product development, manufacturing knowledge and practical installation experience to every project.

Environmental Sustainability

While producing a high-performance insulation product, we continually consider how our materials and manufacturing processes affect the environment.

THERMGUARD is manufactured from approximately 80% recycled newsprint that might otherwise be sent to landfill.

The cellulose fibre is produced using a low-energy milling process, and no water is used during manufacturing. THERMGUARD is also supplied in bags manufactured from recycled plastic.

By improving the thermal performance of the building, THERMGUARD can reduce the amount of energy required for artificial heating and cooling throughout the building’s lifetime.

Fire Retardant

THERMGUARD cellulose fibre insulation is treated with mined inorganic salts that make the product fire retardant.

THERMGUARD has been tested according to SANS 10177 Parts 5 and 10 and is classified:

  • B/B1/2 under SANS 428
  • B-s2,d0 under SANS 53501-1

The product does not support flame spread and will not melt when exposed to heat.

Health and Safety

An important part of our responsibility is providing an insulation product that can be safely installed and used in South African buildings.

The inorganic additives used in THERMGUARD are harmless to people but make the insulation resistant to insects and rodents.

THERMGUARD is also non-allergenic and does not contain loose glass fibres that can irritate the skin during installation or future work within the ceiling cavity.

Approved contractors follow the correct installation procedures, including the safe protection of downlights and appropriate treatment of pipes, wiring and other roof-space obstructions.

Fast and Easy Installation

THERMGUARD is supplied and professionally installed through a nationwide network of approved contractors.

The product is delivered to the site in bags and pneumatically blown into the ceiling cavity using specialised installation equipment.

Installation can usually be completed through the ceiling trapdoor. Where roof access is restricted, sections of roof tiles or roof sheeting may be lifted to provide access.

Because THERMGUARD is blown into position as a loose-fill insulation, it reaches around roof trusses, pipes, wiring and difficult areas to form a continuous insulation layer across the ceiling.

Installation is quick and efficient, with minimal disruption to the building project or occupants.
